Molding & Trim Specs

No Finger-Joint, No Composites, No Laminates.

Just solid, natural, locally sourced wood!

Molding & trim work is the crown of any construction project — and therefore it deserves a quality product like an RBM molding package. Not only will we supply a good-quality molding package, but we can customize it to fit your décor whether it is rustic, contemporary or elegant.

All our moldings are run from stock hand-selected for serviceability and appearance. All are a stain-grade quality which is only possible because of RBM’s diversity and the wide range of products we manufacture. In softwood moldings it is doubtful you will find the level of quality and variety that RBM can offer at a price so affordable. The following are some of the reasons we can make this claim:

  • Because we are a large enough mill to process a fair amount of wood and yet small enough to be a specialty mill, we have a unique ability to hand pick and sort our raw material into all the different characteristics that best make each product. If a board doesn't qualify for molding, we run it to another product that is profitable. In this way we maximize the value of all our wood which allows us to sell all of it at a more reasonable price.
  • All our moldings are run from stock specifically selected for appearance and serviceability for use as moldings and trim work.
  • All this stock is dried to 6% moisture content before being run to pattern. This eliminates any possibility of shrinkage or movement after installation. (This is an extremely important detail to obtain a quality trim job.)
  • All our flat-faced moldings are finished with a sander rather than a molder to eliminate grain tear, knot blowout and planer marks.
  • Softwoods, especially knotty grades, are extremely difficult to machine at such low moisture content but our unique process allows us to do it very successfully.
  • The combinations of so many different species, grades, profiles and textures, all run from stock we produce, makes it so we can readily offer you more options to get the desired appearance for your project.
  • Because we cut all our own lumber and have such a wide range of products, we can high-grade the best stock for the application and still keep our prices affordable.

Molding Species:

Fir and Larch, Pine, Cedar, White Fir, Aspen

Molding Grades:

Vertical grain, select, #2, Blue Stained, Red Stained

Molding Profiles:

Our most common molding package is what we call a Craftsman style which is flat faced with eased edges and a back let. Typically, it has a ¾” thick head, a 5/8”thick casing or leg and a ½”thick base. This way the head is proud of the leg which is proud of the base. Depending on the project, these dimensions can be altered. This particular package can also be textured with wire brush, circle saw, band saw and a combination of textures.

We also have fluted, colonial and clamshell casing as well as other custom profiles and various base profiles and crown moldings. Other moldings include sill stock, wainscot cap or picture frames molding, quarter round, corner cove, base shoe, door stop, head bead and more.

We also can have the ability to create custom molding profiles. We will consider this service on a case by case basis. When choosing a custom profile, please be aware that custom knives will need to be made and there are fees associated with this that can range from $600 and up.

Molding Dimensions:

Stock widths for base are 2 ¼”, 3 ¼”, and 5 ¼” and we make 7 1/4".
Stock widths for casings are 2 ¼” and 3 ¼” and we make 5 1/4.                                                                                                                                                                                      Stock crown come in widths up to 4 1/8" wide.
Stock for S4S comes in 3 1/4 “, 5 1/4″, 7 1/4″ and 1/4" thick up to 8/4 (2"). Wider widths are S2S (surfaced 2 sides). We stock 10″ and 12″ and a few pieces of 14″, 16″ and wider.

Crown Molding Profiles:

We stock two basic crown profiles with 3 or 4 widths in each profile.

Stock Molding Profiles and Notes:

We also stock quarter round, corner cove, outside corner, base shoe, door stop and more. Not all products come in all species, grades, profiles and textures due to difficulty in machining certain grades and profiles.

T&G Paneling Info & Specs

Why is RBM’s T&G the best?

  • Dried to the correct moisture content – 6% for interior and 12% for exterior. Correct moisture content is the most critical aspect in a wood product. It eliminates shrinkage and expansion and undesirable movement and will not expose blind nails.
  • Interior T&G is finished at ½” thick which is much lighter and easier to install. It also is easier to install over drywall.
  • Milled with a tapered tongue and groove for easy and tight installation.
  • Has a sanded face to eliminate planer marks, grain-tare and chipped knots.
  • Tight grading standards tailored to our customers’ general needs.

Wood Paneling Species:

  • Fir and Larch (F&L) Fir & Larch accepts stain extremely well.
  •  Cedar
  • Pine (includes Ponderosa Pine, Lodge pole Pine, White Pine)
  • Alpine Fir (Sometimes called White Fir — like Pine but stains better)
  • Aspen
  • Cottonwood

Widths:

Most paneling products come in 4” (3 1/8” coverage), 6” (5 1/8” coverage) and 8” (6 7/8” coverage).You can combine these for a random width appearance.
Wood Paneling Grades:

  • Vertical Grain (Quarter Sawn, VG)
  • Select (very limited knot content)
  • #2 (has unlimited knots of a good quality.)
  • Rustic (has characteristics some desire and others consider defects)
  • Blue Stained (has natural blue stain, only comes in Pine)
  • Specialty grades such as Spalted or Colored

Wood Paneling Patterns or Profiles:

  • WP-4 (also known as T&G with a V-groove) in stock in most grades and species.
  • EBCB (edge bead/center bead )
  • WP-2 a Victorian style
  • WP-6 (also known as Bullnose)
  • EVCV (same as WP-4 with a V down the center)
  • Center Match (has a completely flat surface like flooring)
  • Fine Line (center match with a tongue 1/8″ longer than the groove to create an 1/8” space between the faces)

We also offer a variety of textures, including smooth, band sawn, circle sawn, band and circle sawn skip sanded and wire brushed.

S4S Molding stock and Furniture Grade

Properly processed, good-quality softwood lumber is nearly impossible to find. The main reason is the difficulty of processing this wood at such low moisture levels. If you are planning to build furniture, cabinets or any other woodworking project that requires precise measurements and joinery the moisture content in the wood is critical. Because it is so hard to process dry softwoods in any kind of volume, we don’t know of anyone else who does it.

We call it molding “stock” because it is the same wood, we run our moldings from. First, all this product line is dried to 6% moisture. Then we re-grade the rough stock according to knot and grain quality and any other characteristics that would affect the workability of the piece. Before we plane it, we surface the face with a sander to avoid grain tear and knot chips. After it is surfaced, we re-sand it. Then it is re-graded with a tighter grading standard than would typically be applied to each grade. We do not represent our moldings or molding stock as stain ready.

In S4S molding stock we offer:
